Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), also called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition. A major symptom of RSD is intense, continuous pain due to a severe injury. This condition often results from a traumatic injury.

The part of the body affected by RSD only becomes more painful over time. RSD usually involves pain in the arms, legs, hands, or feet. What complicates this situation further is that this pain will typically spread to another part of the body. For instance, if a patient is infected with RSD in his arms, there is potential for it to spread to the legs.

Doctors do not know what causes RSD and therefore have been unable to find a cure. Treatment consists of ways to alleviate the pain by prescribing a number of topical analgesics, antidepressants, corticosteroids, and opioids. Some doctors suggest physical therapy, sympathetic nerve block, spinal cord stimulation, and intrathecal drug pumps to deliver opioids and local anesthetic agents via the spinal cord. The prognosis for RSD varies from patient to patient. Some patients undergo an unexpected remission while others are subjected to irreversible pain or crippling, regardless of treatment.

An early diagnosis of RSD or CRPS makes an important difference in terms of how the condition will progress. The later the diagnosis, the more pain a patient will experience.

A diagnosis of RSD/CRPS, can mean a lifetime of medical bills, emotional and social debilitation, and, of course, chronic pain.
