In a dangerous construction accident in New York City, a construction worker was working in a trench on an East Harlem construction site when the trench collapsed, burying him up to his waist in dirt. First responders and the FDNY worked for about an hour before they successfully rescued the 30-year-old construction worker from the accident, but he still suffered personal injuries as a result of the accident. To make matters worse, there were numerous labor law violations, because the construction site did not have a permit for work, nor did it have any of the required safety precautions necessary for the job.
This construction accident happened on March 2nd near a commercial building under construction located at 122nd Street between Park and Lexington Avenues. Rescuers say they used a Con Edison vacuum truck to suck up dirt as they dug around the man and rigged a pulley on the building’s wall to remove him safely. “He was conscience throughout the entire time. The problem was he was wedged up against the wall and it was a very tight space so in order for us to work there safety it took a long time for us to actually set up and go down and get him,” said FDNY Chief Daniel Donoghue. Unsurprisingly, city officials issued a stop work order for the illegal site as a result of its many labor law violations.
