A Manhattan nursing home is supposed to be a place where a person’s loved one can receive the medical and physical care that they need but all too often, patients are neglected, suffering with dehydration, bed sores, and other ailments. Medication errors may occur because staff is not giving attention to what that patient needs or how much, leading to medical errors and death. When assisted living facilities are found negligent in their responsibilities to their patients, they should be held legally responsible.
Nursing home negligence has led to multiple criminal charges after it was discovered that patient records were altered to make it appear as if a patient had left the nursing home despite medical staff’s attempts to persuade him to remain in the nursing home. However, it turns out that the man simply disappeared and no one reported him missing for two weeks; it was unknown whether the man, who suffers from dementia, was found.
While typical neglect cases may involve malnutrition and allowing patients to fall by failing to put preventative measures in place, it should be remembered that there are other ways in which the safety of a patient can be compromised through neglect. Nursing homes and care centers are entrusted with someone’s grandfather, father, mother, or aunt, and they are responsible for the safety and security of those who are residing in their walls. When a family member suspects that their loved one may be the victim of abuse or neglect, it may be a good idea to speak with an experienced attorney for legal guidance.
