Welding accidents in Manhattan are common and can cause life-threatening injuries to the welder and other construction workers doing their jobs in the vicinity of the accident. The tanks and torches that are used to weld structures can cause eye injuries and burns. Furthermore, the torch puts off an intense amount of heat and creates molten metals and sparks that can ignite flammable materials in the area and cause fatalities.
A federal lawsuit was recently filed after construction workers claim that the negligent actions of welders who were working on an oil tank’s pipe resulted in explosions that killed three and injured others late last year. Two workers are seeking $180 million in damages for injuries reportedly suffered at the inattentive hands of subcontractors who were hired to work on an oil platform. According to reports, the subcontracting welders were not properly supervised and carried on their project without first clearing the area of combustible fuels. They also allegedly continued welding despite the fact that gas was present in the air.
Though the exact injuries are unclear at this time, the wounded workers assert that they suffered both physical and mental damages. It is unknown whether or not family members of the deceased individuals have filed or will file a wrongful death lawsuit against the oil company.
